Agile Practices

What is Agile?

The term Agile Software Development was invented in 2001.  It is a philosophy of software development.  It has also been adopted by the business community. Agile practices can be seen all over the world in different situations.  In Holland, for example, Scrum is widely used in classrooms.  In company boardrooms Kanban boards are not uncommon.  Scaled Agile Framework is increasingly seen as a business tool, as well as a software development tool. Since every company now must have some form of IT, Agile practices are relevant almost everywhere.

Agile software practices grew out of a tremendous need to make the software engineering profession more efficient in the 1990s.  The Agile Manifesto was published in 2001, but it was based on years of work by thought leaders in the software industry.  We've had thousands of years to learn how to build roads, bridges, and buildings.  But we've had little over 70 years to learn how to build software.  The industry is constantly evolving and improving. Agile was the next evolution of the software industry at that time.
